You’ve heard about Rubella (aka German Measles)! You’ve witnessed the large vaccination drives in 2018-19 and back in 2022 for ‘govar’ or Rubella. Guess what Nepal has achieved Rubella Elimination. What does that mean for India? Where do we stand?
Large-scale vaccination campaigns are essential to reach every child, particularly in rural and hard-to-access areas, ensuring high vaccine coverage across the country.
A robust surveillance system must be established to accurately track rubella cases and identify any new outbreaks early on.
Widespread community education is needed to address vaccine hesitancy and raise awareness about the importance of rubella prevention.
India has made significant progress toward rubella elimination through its nationwide MR vaccination campaigns, but challenges like reaching remote populations, vaccine hesitancy, and maintaining high coverage still remain. With sustained efforts, robust surveillance, and community participation, India is on track to follow Nepal’s success story.
For complete elimination, continuous vaccine campaigns and public health follow up is required. Given India’s size and population, it is difficult to ensure that these campaigns reaches every part of the country. With continuous efforts and awareness it is possible for India to achieve Rubella elimination
Theres nothing impossible with a good strategic plan and continuous efforts. India eliminated polio and why can’t Rubella? We should start campaigns for awareness purposes, maintain strict surveillance, community engagement etc small steps can ensure to eliminate Rubella from India.
Yes ofcourse India will achieve rubella India is pushing to stamp out rubella by 2026, with districts already reporting zero cases and vaccine efforts reaching nearly every child.India is on track to wipe out rubella, thanks to wide vaccination drives that are protecting millions of children.
