National leprosy control programme

Leprosy is also known as Hansen’s disease. It is chronic but curable bacterial infection.this caused by myco bacteria named Mycobacterium leprae.

Leprosy is curable disease by multi drug therapy. Leprosy is not highly contagious and spreads mainly through prolonged, close contact with untreated patients, likely via droplets from the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.

National leprosy control programme or national leprosy eradication programme

National leprosy control programme was started in 1955, to control the leprosy by detecting the early symptoms of it.

Objectives and Milestone score

objectives are to interrupt transmission, keep prevalence below 1 case per 10,000 population, reduce Grade 2 disability, and ensure zero stigma and discrimination against persons affected by leprosy.

India reached the national “elimination as a public health problem” target (prevalence <1/10,000) in 2005, and now aims for zero transmission of leprosy by 2027 as per the National Strategic Plan & Roadmap for Leprosy 2023–2027.

That’s a really good initiative. India needs to take such initiatives to address many diseases and control their spread.

This will be a great milestone, after becoming polio free now India is heading towards becoming leprosy free country.

Leprosy can easily spread through contact. Creating awareness is key in controlling such a disease. Programmes such as these provide knowledge and guidance to people who lack awareness.
