Rabies - A Persistent Public Health Challenge.

With a fatality rate of nearly 100%, rabies causes an estimated 60,000 deaths globally every year and 40% of the victims are children.

In a recent report, India documented over 3.7 million dog bite cases and 54 suspected human rabies deaths in a single year.

The Rabies lyssavirus, a negative-sense single-stranded RNA virus, is transmitted primarily through the bite of infected dogs. After replicating in muscle tissue, it travels along peripheral nerves to the brain, causing progressive encephalitis.

Once clinical symptoms appear — fever, hydrophobia, confusion, paralysis, survival is exceedingly rare.

Key preventive measures:

Immediate wound cleansing with soap and water.

Timely administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) — rabies vaccine + rabies immunoglobulin.

Pre-exposure vaccination for high-risk groups.

Mass dog vaccination to break transmission

cycles.

Be careful as it it’s fatal. Every rabies death is a preventable tragedy awareness and timely action can turn the tide.

This is a sensitive topic to discuss. Dogs are often loyal companions and a favourite to many, yet they can also transmit a deadly disease to human - rabies. Death from rabies is one of the most terrifying and painful ways to die. Sadly, in some cases, even timely vaccinations fail to save lives.

Where I live, stray dogs are everywhere sometimes friendly, sometimes not. We’ve heard of people getting bitten, and the word “rabies” always brings fear. It’s a disease you can’t take lightly because once it shows symptoms, it’s almost always fatal. The worst part is, most of us don’t even know where to get the vaccine quickly or how many doses are needed. For me, rabies isn’t just a health topic it’s a real, daily worry that walks our streets on four legs.

Preventing rabies within our country requires smart strategies beyond just simple vaccination. One major step is controlling stray dog populations humanely through sterilization programs and this will reduce the number of potential carriers. Moreover, educating communities is highly essential about how to avoid dog bites and also immediate wound cleaning with soap and water can drastically lower the infection risk. In addition, by utilizing novel cost-effective vaccines and ensuring timely post-exposure therapy can save several lives. It is pivotal to strengthen the surveillance process and quick reporting thereafter, as it can help in tracking outbreaks much early. Through a combination of all these efforts, a stronger and smarter defense can be built against rabies.
