Protein Shakes: their utility and possible harms

Protein shakes are common supplements are often taken by ongoing gym goers to enhance their muscle build-up and recovery. Are they useful?? Do they also provide other micronutrients and vitamins ?? Do they build some kind of side effects which are not visible and are harmful to your body on long term basis ??

Protein does help in recovery, but how to decide the correct quantity to be taken?
Big question- Is it really protein?

Good in small amounts, but not a replacement for healthy food.

Yes They are useful because whey protein is a complete protein and it helps in muscle recovery, repair and growth. It also prevents from muscle loss. They don’t provide any micronutrients cause its whey but you don’t take it for micronutrients you take it for your protein requirements.
There is little to no side effects except some people might face bloating or digestive issues. That’s why there is an “isolate” type of whey which doesn’t meddle with digestion in people sensitive to it.

After quality checkups and testing all lab reports we have choose our protein brand
To calculate the daily requirements use a formula
1.5 g * (Body weight)
Then consume your protein

Good to be consumed in small amounts, as a supplement but not as replacement to food.

This is a great thread! While we often talk about protein shakes, a similar concern exists with protein bars, especially regarding their digestibility and overall nutritional value.

If anyone’s interested in diving deeper into how protein bars are marketed vs. how they’re metabolized in the body, check out this article from MedBound Times:
:backhand_index_pointing_right: Protein Bars and the Digestibility Dilemma

It explores:

  • Why “high protein” doesn’t always mean “highly digestible”
  • How ingredients like sugar alcohols and fiber fillers affect gut health
  • What to look for when choosing a protein bar

It’s a useful companion read to this conversation and expands the scope beyond just shakes. Would love to hear your thoughts after reading it!
