Whey Protein: What It Is, and Do You Really Need It?

Protein is essential for everyone not just for building muscle, but also for tissue repair, immunity, hormone production, and overall health. Most adults require at least 1 g of protein per kg of body weight per day, and this requirement can increase based on physical activity levels.

Whey protein is a high-quality protein derived from milk and contains all essential amino acids, making it easily absorbed by the body. However, whey should not be the only source of protein you rely on,it is meant to supplement your diet, not replace whole foods. If you can meet your protein needs through natural sources like pulses, eggs, dairy, meat, nuts, and seeds, whey protein may not be necessary.

Whey protein is not suitable for everyone. People with milk protein allergy, lactose intolerance, sensitive digestion, kidney problems, or those on medically restricted protein diets should avoid or use it only under medical guidance. Excess or unnecessary supplementation can also strain the gut and kidneys in the long run.

Have you used whey protein before? What benefits or side effects did you notice?
