When I completed my B.Pharm, I assumed the next step would be straightforward. Like many pharmacy graduates, I thought I would pursue M.Pharm and continue along a familiar academic path. It’s what most of us hear about—industry roles, research, and a clear academic pathway. Pharm.D wasn’t really on my list at first.
I realized I was more interested in the clinical and therapeutic side of pharmacy. What made me pause was realizing that both B.Pharm and M.Pharm are largely industry-driven. I wanted more exposure to hospitals, patient care, and real-world therapeutic decision-making, not just theory or lab work.
Choosing Pharm.D wasn’t easy. The biggest doubt was time. After four years of B.Pharm, I’d have to invest another three years, which felt like a big commitment, and I was genuinely confused about whether it would be worth it.
But the more I explored, it became more clear that Pharm.D was the right choice. It aligned with my interests and offered the kind of clinical exposure I was looking for and how I wanted to grow as a pharmacist.
In the end, Pharm.D wasn’t a spontaneous decision, but a thoughtful one. Not because it’s better than M.Pharm, but because it suited my interests and long-term goals.
If you’re confused after B.Pharm, that’s normal. Take the time to understand what kind of pharmacist you want to become. Sometimes, the right choice is the one that takes a little longer…but feels more aligned.
