Importance of Sleep During Examination Preparation

Sleep is another aspect of exam preparation that is mostly disregarded, although it plays a very important role in cognitive performance. It has been scientifically proven that memory consolidation, attention, and problem-solving ability highly depend on sufficient sleep. Newly acquired information is processed and stored in the brain during sleep, especially at the REM stage. Lack of sleep is a major setback to studying, no matter how much time is spent.

There are many cases where students sacrifice sleep in the effort to prolong their study time. Nevertheless, lack of sleep causes lack of concentration, irritability, poor judgment, and high-level anxiety. Such consequences have an adverse impact on performance in exams. The regular sleeping pattern during exams helps in mindfulness and control of emotions. Focus and retention can be significantly enhanced by even six or seven hours of continuous sleep.

Sleep quality can be improved by limiting how much time is spent on the screen before bed, ensuring the avoidance of extra caffeine, and providing a bed with a relaxing environment. The use of short power naps can also be used to regain alertness when applied in the right way.It is important to learn that sleep is an academic aid and not a distraction. The brain is very effective when it is rested rather than when it is fatigued.

It is not an indicator of less effort made, and therefore a priority point towards good sleep and better learning and performance during examinations.

Sleep is an essential part of exam preparation. A proper night’s sleep can improve performance far more than last minute cramming.
