Health Insurance in the Digital Age: Why Many Indians Still Remain Uninsured

In today’s world of digital knowledge, health insurance is still not a common practice for many people, especially in low- and middle-income countries like India. Digital access has increased awareness, but actual adoption remains uneven. Even though in recent past years, government has taken initiatives and launched various health insurance schemes all over India like Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana Scheme to provide benefits to lower socio-economic people. Question arises in my mind- What about the upper-lower income and middle- income people? How can they be benefitted?

People Google symptoms instantly, but postpone planning for financial health until a medical emergency occurs. They do so because people believe so:-

1. “I am healthy, I don’t need it”

Many people believe insurance is needed only when illness occurs.
But health insurance works best before you fall sick—not after.

2. Confusing policy terms

Words like deductible, co-pay, exclusions, and waiting period often feel overwhelming.
This confusion makes people postpone decisions.

3. Fear of claim rejection

Stories about claims being rejected or delayed reduce trust, even though many claims are successfully settled every day.

4. Dependence on savings or family

Traditionally, families rely on:

  • Personal savings

  • Borrowing from relatives

  • Selling assets instead of planned financial protection

To solve the problem of underutilization of Health insurance whether government or private schemes, we can launch mass campaigns for patient education.Patient education is the key to turning insurance coverage into real financial protection. Simple guidance can prevent unnecessary stress and financial loss. Following are the key takeaways for the education:

· Patients should be encouraged to inform the hospital early about their insurance.

· Patients should be advised to keep:Insurance card / e-card,Policy number, Aadhaar or ID proof

· Patients must understand: Cashless does not mean “no questions”. Clear explanation by insurance companies prevents disappointment and mistrust.

Role of hospitals and healthcare workers

Healthcare institutions can support patients by:

· Setting up insurance help desks

· Displaying simple posters in local languages

· Training staff to guide patients calmly

· Explaining insurance options during admission, not discharge

Small steps can make a big difference.

I believe together we all can make a difference in having the access to the healthcare facilities in the emergency or the required time by being little more vigilant and making other’s vigilant too.
