Why Indian people lacks in general medical knowledge ? Is this the failure of education system ?

Many people in India do not have enough general knowledge about health and medicine. This is not because they are not interested, but because health education is not given enough importance. In schools, students learn biology, but they are not taught simple and useful things like first aid, vaccination, or how to take care of common illnesses.

In most families, people depend on home remedies or advice from elders instead of learning proper medical facts. While traditional methods are useful sometimes, they cannot replace scientific medical knowledge. In villages and rural areas, access to doctors and hospitals is also limited, so people rely on hearsay or sometimes even wrong information they see online.

Another reason is that preventive healthcare is not common in India. Many people only think about health when they fall sick, instead of learning how to stay healthy. Because of this, medical knowledge is not seen as a part of general knowledge in daily life.

To improve this, health awareness should be taught in schools and promoted in communities. If people know about basic health, they will be able to take better care of themselves and their families.

Q:- what you think is the main reason of these type of issue in india ?

Health awareness in school can help.

Indians often lack general medical knowledge mainly because our education system ignores practical health literacy and society relies more on myths, stigma, and misinformation than scientific awareness.

I think the main reason is that health education is not treated as a daily life skill in India. In schools, we learn science but not how to apply it in real situations like first aid or disease prevention. Many families still follow old advice without checking facts, and in rural areas, access to doctors is very limited. Also, people only focus on health when they fall sick, not before. If health awareness was part of school and community learning, things would slowly improve. We need to make medical knowledge simple and reachable for everyone.

Indian people’s are always use home remedies to cure .they don’t have simple medical knowledge. People often consult doctor and sometimes didn’t consult doctor. People think about health when they are sick instead of thinking to measures to stay healthy hence it is necessary to educate in schools

I think there is a lack of general knowledge around modern medicine because of the social stigma surrounding illness and diseases that cannot be cured from the home in India. I’ve obeserved that, in our culture especially amongst the older generation, the capacity to be able to heal and prevent illness is a direct testament to their devotion and care for their loved ones.

In my opinion, seeking special medical attention insinutates the idea that they may have failed as care-givers, which is why they do not readily approve of or rely on modern medicine.

It’s True, our education system teaches biology but not practical health skills like first aid, hygiene, or disease awareness. That’s why many Indians lack basic medical knowledge. Health literacy is still very low, especially in rural areas. Adding simple health lessons in schools and spreading awareness through community programs can really make a difference.

Teaching health awareness in schools can help students learn about staying physically and mentally healthy, making healthy choices, and developing good habits from a young age.

Yes, true. I feel the main reason for this issue in India is the lack of proper health education and awareness from an early age. Schools focus more on theoretical biology rather than practical health knowledge like first aid, vaccinations, nutrition, or managing common illnesses. Additionally, cultural reliance on home remedies, limited access to qualified doctors in rural areas, and preventive healthcare not being a priority make people less informed. Combining formal education with community awareness programs could help bridge this gap and make basic medical knowledge a part of everyday life.

Not just medical education, but our overall system misses out on some of the most essential life skills.
We are rarely taught about taxation, money management, job opportunities, or how to handle real-world challenges.

Instead, the entire focus remains on marks and academic performance—on becoming “academically rich.”
But when it comes to survival in real life, many find themselves unprepared.

The competition is often about who scores more, rather than who is equipped with the skills to thrive beyond exams.
