Should India make universal health insurance compulsory for all citizens?

This could ensure affordable treatment for all citizens and reduce medical bankruptcies. However, implementing it in a large, diverse country like India requires huge funding and strong regulation.

Yes, universal health insurance in India could help everyone get treatment without worrying about big medical bills. It would also prevent families from going into debt because of health issues. But for it to work well, India needs:

  • Better hospitals and clinics in villages and small towns
  • A system where the rich pay more, and the poor get support
  • Good teamwork between government and private hospitals

If done right, it can make healthcare fair and affordable for all.

Currently, around 51% of India’s population is insured, and PM-JAY covers nearly 50 crore vulnerable individuals with up to ₹5 lakh per family.

However, almost half the population still lacks protection. Achieving true universal coverage will require closing the ‘missing middle’ gap, strengthening healthcare infrastructure, and ensuring timely claim reimbursements to keep both public and private providers engaged.

Before making it compulsory

Government should first start making people aware about it ,
Literacy rate is going higher in india but people still lack medical literacy and are done fraud by GPs who basically scare them for a life .

What’s health insurance,
what it might cover ,
why it’s important ,
Which all hospitals will it cover ,
Which diseases will it cover ,
How many days will it take to process the amount ,

Everything’s important,
Or else it’s just another business started

During my internship I worked with the
Pradhan Mantri relief fund

And many people’s application was rejected bcoz they simply didnt knew how to apply , under which category they could apply

Literacy is what’s needed
And about the health insurance people know better which one to choose rather depend on government

Government should educate people to be independent not dependent on it!!

A phased rollout may work best start with low income and vulnerable groups, strengthen healthcare infrastructure, and gradually expand until all citizens are covered. Public private partnerships, digital health records, and stricter hospital regulation could help make it sustainable.

Compulsory health insurance could be a game-changer guaranteeing that basic healthcare is available to each citizen without the threat of crippling costs. Affordable implementation obviously presents some challenge along with avoiding corruption. If designed in a transparent manner and giving subsidies to low-income groups, this could address vast gaps in healthcare provision and even mitigate medical debts in the country.

Universal health insurance sounds like a good idea for India. It can help poor families get treatment without worrying about money. Many people go into debt because of hospital bills. But making it compulsory needs strong planning and big funds. Also, rules must be clear so that everyone gets fair coverage. If done right, it can improve public health and reduce inequality

Yeah, I agree.
With universal health insurance, everyone pays a small amount regularly, and in return, medical costs are covered when they need treatment. It would help a lot of people, but making it work in a big country like ours won’t be easy.
If planned well, it could really change lives.

I think its implementation will ensure that every citizen of the country, regardless of the income gets access to the essential healthcare without fearing the medical bills. This application will expand the preventive care and thereby, will also improve early diagnosis by encouraging people for regular check-ups. However, awareness is equally important, as people must understand their coverage and how to use it effectively, otherwise even the best policy will remain underutilized. Moreover, to make sure that this insurance is yielding and translating into real and timely care, firm regulations are required to prevent frauds related to it.

Yes it may really be helpful. Many people ignore usual symptoms, which may lead to dangerous effects in the later stage. If universal insurance is implemented then every citizen can opt for a routine check up annually, imagine what level of changes can this make.

Yes Making healthcare affordable for everyone could save many families from medical debt and ensure people get the treatment they need. But in a country as large and diverse as India, this would need massive funding, strict rules, and proper planning to make it work well for all.

Making health insurance mandatory sounds like a straightforward way to protect people from crushing medical bills, but in a country as big and varied as India, the real challenge is in the “how.” Coverage is only meaningful if it’s affordable, accessible, and backed by a system that can deliver quality care when people need it. Without careful planning, strong oversight, and investment in public healthcare infrastructure, compulsory insurance could risk becoming just another cost for citizens without fixing the gaps in treatment. Done right, though, it could be a powerful step toward making healthcare a right in practice, not just on paper.

Yes, compulsory health insurance will benefit all Indian citizens immensely. It is the ULTIMATE incentive that could create lasting change and kindle hope in the lives of the lower economic classes. Similar to the concept of free healthcare, certain high quality health care initiatives must be made free and/or affordable to all, especially in childbirth, pediatrics and oncological sectors.

It was found out in study that majority of Indians spend 80% out of their pockets for healthcare costs. It is high time that government make some schemes to make insurance compulsory

Making universal health insurance compulsory in India sounds promising, but implementation is the real challenge . The government would first need to improve hospitals and its infrastructure , reduce corruption in insurance claim processing, reach every villages .without fixing this gaps insurance could end as another wallet rather then protection . If it is done with transparently it would be a game changer .
