It is very common to see people offering a cold drink to someone experiencing acidity, indigestion or after overeating to help “digest” the food.
I wonder why fizzy soft drinks became a “quick fix” for digestive discomfort. Maybe the cold temperature and burping from carbonation creates the feeling of relief and the drink gets remembered as the solution, but does temporary relief always mean the actual problem is improving?
The reality is that these drinks can make it even worse. It can increase gas in stomach and cause increased pressure and reflux. Caffeine in the drinks signals the body to produce more acid. Long term use of these drinks can lead to gastric ulcers and disrupt digestion.
Sometimes what feels effective in the moment may only be masking the discomfort temporarily.
