That "Acidity Tablet" in Every Indian Household, Is It Always Harmless?

After a heavy meal, spicy food, or late-night snacking, many of us immediately reach for an antacid or acidity medicine. In fact, products for acidity relief have become so common that they are often treated like everyday household items.

But have you ever wondered how these medicines actually work?

Most antacids provide quick relief by neutralizing excess stomach acid, helping reduce symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion. Other medicines, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), work differently by reducing acid production in the stomach itself.

While occasional use is generally considered safe, frequent self-medication can sometimes mask underlying conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, or other digestive disorders. Experts also caution that long-term, unsupervised use of acid-suppressing medications may be associated with side effects and nutrient absorption issues.

Sometimes recurring “acidity” is not just acidity, it may be a signal that the body is asking us to look deeper into our diet, lifestyle, stress levels, or digestive health.

Do you usually try lifestyle changes first, or do you reach for an acidity medicine when symptoms appear?

I try to address the underlying cause first—avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, and not lying down immediately after eating. If symptoms are frequent or persistent, it’s important to seek medical advice rather than relying on repeated self-medication.

Lifestyle changes first. Medicines can help when needed, but preventing the trigger works best for me

For someone with genuine issue of GERD , gastritis taking antacids when prescribed by a clinician is justified but they should be on regular follow up . Most of the times they continue without supervision which lead to long term side effect of the antacid taken.

I make lifestyle changes first instead of taking medications. We need to understand the cause first.

I usually fix diet and habits first, but keep antacids as backup when discomfort becomes too frequent or hard to ignore.

I generally avoid taking antacid if I ever suffer from acid reflux or indigestion. I prefer to eat banana, yoghurt generally as it is easily found in household and is also good for body. I stop eating processed foods, oily and fried foods which I know is not good for stomach. I avoid having big bites. After food I go for walk at least for the digestion.

Depends on the condition actually..
The only reason for acidity is not only the spicy food but the interval between the two meals can also play a important role. Eating after a long can also make a sudden acidic reflux and i think during that condition, medicine is the only way.
And yes if you are regularly having spicy or junk food then you need to have a lifestyle change.

The underlying cause has to be established before proceeding to treatment. So it’s better to get doctor’s advise before take otc medicines more than a limited dosage (or for regular usage )
