Since 1992, the world has observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities(IDPD) on December 3rd each year to raise awareness about disability related issues, promote the rights, dignity & well-being of PwDs.
Beyond raising awareness & promoting their well-being for a more equitable world, the spirit of the IDPD may be seen in the people who, despite having disabilities, refused to let their limits define them. I’m referring to none other than Sir Stephen Hawking and Helen Keller, ma’am.
Their determination & achievements have not only transformed their respective areas but also encouraged the world to recognize that PwDs are a monument to human potential rather than a hindrance to greatness.
- Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking is one of the most powerful inspirations for the IDPD 2025.
Despite being diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) at the age of 21, he went on to become one of the most recognized scientists in modern history & challenged the world’s understanding of disability.
He is best known for his work on black holes, the theory of cosmology & concept of Hawking radiation(describes the emission of radiation from black holes).
Hawking was awarded numerous prestigious awards, including the Albert Einstein Award, the Wolf Prize in Physics, the Copley Medal, & the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
On IDPD 2025, Stephen Hawking’s journey sends a strong message that disability does not define a person; determination, opportunity, & support do.
- Helen Keller
Helen Keller is yet another powerful inspiration for IDPD 2025.
American novelist and activist Helen Keller overcame the challenges of being deaf and blind. Being the first deafblind person to get a Bachelor of Arts degree, Hellen went on to become a global advocate for disability rights, education, and social inclusion.
Keller was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in addition to honorary degrees from other universities. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was also co-founded by her.
On IDPD 2025, Helen Keller’s legacy inspires us to replace barriers with belief and to recognize that true ability lies in courage & resilience.
The theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) 2025 is - Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.
Significances:
-
It combats stigma and prejudice while promoting knowledge and comprehension of the difficulties experienced by persons with disabilities.
-
It honours the tenacity, leadership, and achievements of PwDs as equal members of society in an array of professions, including arts, education, science, and civic life.
-
It encourages the mobilisation of resources, legislative changes, and political resolve to guarantee empowerment, accessibility, and rights protection.
