Every 3 seconds, someone in the world develops dementia. In India, nearly 8–9 million people live with the condition — yet stigma and lack of awareness delay diagnosis and care.
This year’s theme, #AskAboutDementia, urges us to break the silence:
Learn the do’s & don’ts of caregiving
Adopt simple prevention steps (healthy diet, active lifestyle, social engagement)
Know where to seek help (NPHCE clinics, ARDSI helpline, community NGOs)
I’ve created a short Instagram carousel with practical do’s/don’ts, prevention tips, nutrition advice, and Indian helplines Have a read!
Let’s start a conversation — what small steps can communities take to reduce stigma and support caregivers?
It is important to increase awareness about dementia. Community conversations such as neighbours checking in or schools inviting experts to talk about brain health can also create a real difference.
The theme “Ask About Dementia” is so powerful because it encourages open conversation and removes the stigma surrounding the disease. It’s a great reminder that understanding and empathy are key to helping those affected.
Such a crucial reminder that dementia is a social as well as a medical issue. It is possible to genuinely transform lives by erasing stigma, assisting caregivers, and raising awareness.
“World Alzheimer’s Day 2025 is a reminder to raise awareness about dementia—a condition that not only affects memory but also impacts behavior, relationships, and quality of life. Asking, learning, and talking openly about dementia can help reduce stigma, promote early diagnosis, and support caregivers and patients alike.”
