International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed every year on 3rd December. Health days are celebrated to raise awareness among the masses and to spread important messages Globally.
This day was proposed by the United Nations to highlight the concerns of persons with disabilities and to ensure provision of equal opportunities for them in all spheres of life, and most importantly to promote their overall health and well-being.
It has been observed since 1992, with a specific theme announced every year.
The United Nations theme for 2025 is:
“Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.”
Persons with disabilities face several challenges:
-
From birth, many are deprived of love, care, and acceptance within their own families.
-
They often suffer from multiple health-related challenges.
-
Mobility remains a major issue—especially in India—due to limited facilities such as low-floor buses for wheelchair users and inadequate ramps in hospitals and public places.
I urge everyone to make small but meaningful efforts to make their lives easier and happier. Let us respect, include, and celebrate them as “specially-abled” individuals, recognizing their strengths, dignity, and equal place in society.
