🧑‍🔬 Why Don’t More Students Explore Research Early?

Despite studying drug design, clinical trials, or healthcare systems, many students don’t get involved in actual research until postgrad. But by then, the fear of protocols, paper writing, or lab work can already feel overwhelming.

What’s stopping students from starting early?

  • Lack of mentorship?
  • Limited exposure?
  • No confidence or training?
  • Or maybe… it’s just not encouraged?

Early research builds critical thinking, problem-solving, and opens doors to academic or industrial careers.

Do you think research should be actively introduced during undergrad? If yes, how early and in what way?

I think exploring research tends to feel daunting, it makes one so aware of all that they don’t know and they fear taking the big jump. The sooner you get over of the overwhelming feeling surrounding research the further you progress. I think research can be introduced after around 2 years of undergraduate experience by joining an associate professor in their lab.
