Have you ever noticed some people start sweating while eating? Most people assume it is due to spicy or hot food, or due to the weather. In most of the cases, it’s true but some people sweat every time while eating. This is called as gustatory sweating.
It is the sweating that occurs in response to eating, smelling, or sometimes even thinking about food. It most commonly affects the face, neck, and upper chest.
Why does gustatory sweating happen?
During eating, the body naturally activates digestive processes. Spicy foods contain capsaicin, which stimulates nerve endings and creates a sensation of heat which causes sweating as a part of the thermoregulatory response. Other than this, gustatory sweating can also occur due to abnormal nerve signalling. Eg- Frey Syndrome, where sweating develops due to injury involving the parotid salivary gland.
Sweating while eating is a normal body response, however, excessive facial sweating can be due to conditions like hyperhidrosis, Frey syndrome or diabetes related nerve changes.
Have you noticed certain foods trigger more sweating than others?
Spicy and hot foods always gives sweating, particularly if consumed during summers. But never thought if desserts or foods like yogurt, milk, ice creams can also cause sweating. Well not normally for sure.
Very informative post.I’ve noticed that spicy foods definitely make sweating more noticeable. But it’s interesting to know that sweating while eating isn’t always about the food being hot, it can also involve nerve signalling and conditions like Frey syndrome. A simple everyday response with a surprisingly interesting physiology behind it!
Yes! Spicy foods definitely seem to trigger it more but it’s interesting that gustatory sweating can also happen because of changes in nerve signalling. Such a fascinating example of how closely our nervous system is connected to everyday functions like eating!
