Why Do Many Patients Believe Expensive Medicines Work Better?

Many pateint think costly medicine works better because of the big pharma companies they think that if they can put this thought in patients that costly medicine mean better treatment they can earn more

so this is totally a big marketing strategy.

yes, many patients believe that higher priced medicines are more effective and of better quality.

That’s common perception but it’s not true as the effectiveness of the medicine is not depending on its price rather it’s based on effectiveness.

Generic medicines in India are equally effective as the branded ones. The issue is majorly marketing and lack of awareness here. I guess doctors and healthcare sectors should focus on quality and affordability not over the perceptions.

Yes, because the fear of having poor quality fillers and getting a fake medicine pushes one to spend more for their health. Ultimately the drug control authorities have failed us.

People usually think expensive medicines work better because of psychology. We believe things that are hard to afford must be better, like they’re expensive for a reason. So we assume they work more effectively, even if that’s not always true.

In my opinion, patients always believe as per their previous experience with the medicines. Trust in doctors and understanding about the composition of drug can do a lot to change this perception.

Yes , that’s absolutely true people in India trust doctors and they prefer going with the brands suggested by their doctors doesn’t matter if the same medicine combination is available for lesser price , I have seen patient travelling to different cities just to get the medicines prescribed by their doctors as they are not available in their city .Its patient psychology .

I feel there can only be mixed answer to this question as the medicines available at cheaper prices are generally not well advertised so are less known hence less belief. Also sometimes they can be of lower standards. Medicines coming with proper branding and marketing make people think they work better which can be a misconception. Awareness and trust of patients in medicine and doctor play important role in treatment outcomes.

A very slight difference valid between the generic medicine and branded medicine but this all totally negligible, all of both are safe for using but branded one is more expensive than the generic once. If a doctor prescribed paracitamol 650mg then we always don’t need to purchase from alkem lab paracitamol, we can also use the generic branded paracitamol as well, because both of these medicines are working exact similar.

In today’s digital area people’s perception is built on information from social media handles which is backed by marketing strategies of prominent pharmaceutical companies which churns false interpretation of facts. People often adhere to what other people’s opinions are which is why they neglect experimentating things on their own.

People are further convinced when these products are promoted by eminent public figures like celebrities who are favoured by a large number of people.

Generic medicines though more affordable and with similar efficacy lack promotion.

People lack the basic knowledge and awareness which is required to be instilled in them. They ought to be made aware of the government driven programs which ensure affordable medicines as these facilities are largely underutilized inspite of being an economic wonder.

Somewhere, society taught us that “costly means better.” From phones to clothes to hospitals, price has become a symbol of trust. So when medicines are cheap, patients often doubt them emotionally, even before understanding their actual effectiveness. It’s less about science now, and more about mindset shaped over years.

Well there has been a direct association of expensive with good quality. But as observed in case of pharmacological preparations, its NOT true. Many generic drugs does the same work at half or less the cost of the expensive alternative.

This awareness is so crucial.Trust should be built on bioequivalence, not a price tag.

In my opinion, high medicines costs are a major public health challenge. We must encourage patients to choose generics over expensive to ensure effective treatment without financial stress. Providing life-saving quality at lower prices is essential for everyone.

Maybe because it is just mindset of our society, that expensive products or things are better because it is made with more precision, the raw materials which are used are more effective because it is rarely found and are expensive. And again because it is “Branded” ,so it can be trusted.

People psychologically tend to choose cheaper medicines, but awareness of drug manufacturing should be spread to everyone to make better choices.

I feel many people do trust expensive medicines more because price is often linked with quality in our minds. But awareness about generic medicines and proper guidance can help patients understand that effectiveness depends on the medicine’s composition, not just the brand or price.

This is what we call " marketing place effect" . Psychologically , patients associate higher cost with higher and superior quality. High prices triggers strong expectations of healing and activating the brain’s rewards mechanism.

I don’t think the price of a medicine decides its effectiveness. Many affordable generic medicines contain the same active ingredients and show the same therapeutic effect as expensive branded ones because they are tested for safety and efficacy too. Trust should be built on scientific evidence and results, not on how costly the medicine looks.

Quality is often associated with price. However people are not familiar with concept of generic drugs . Price does influence how people trust a medicine. It is however from a long time that people have developed this mindset.
