Branded medicines are often trusted because we are more familiar with them, but in many cases, well regulated generics work just as well and cost much less. For long-term treatments, affordability really matters, and generics can make it easier for patients to continue their medication regularly.

The common people don’t have the proper knowledge about the difference between generic drugs and branded drugs. The one who cannot afford branded drugs prefer generic drugs and vice versa. They don’t see the difference or the use of it,they just look into the price tag that is marketed now days. The education and awareness about the drugs they use should be known to the people before they use it.

More over the pharmacist or the doctors prescribe branded drugs compared to generic drugs now a days. So there is no advantage of disadvantages of generic over branded drugs. It depends on the people who prescribe it and the customer or patients who buy it.

Most of the people are unaware of the generic medicines as they have always been prescribed branded drugs . Generic drugs can be promoted by using engaging posts on social media , easiest way to reach general public.

I believe that due to the notion of low cost means low quality prevails mong general public they resort to branded medicines. Thus people should be well informed based on the quality of generic medicines also

Branded medicines are commonly trusted due to their familiarity and nowadays its mostly believed that expensive drugs will have better action, but in many situations, properly regulated generic drugs are equally effective and far more affordable. For long-term therapy, cost plays a crucial role, and generics help patients maintain consistent medication use without financial strain.

Generic medicines in India lack popularity in public. Most of people do not know that there is something called generic medicine available at low cost. Even if few know about it, they lack trust on the quality at low cost. Pharma companies are using this for the promotion of branded medicine. A strong intervention by the government in this respect would bring change in the future of generic medicine.

This situation clearly proves the idiom “all that glitters is not gold.” Many people assume that costly, well-marketed branded medicines work better, but in reality, well-regulated generic medicines are often cut from the same cloth and provide the same therapeutic benefit.

For example, a commonly prescribed antibiotic or painkiller works the same whether it is branded or generic, as long as it meets quality standards. Still, branding rings a bell, so patients trust the expensive option, believing it will act faster or better. Influenced by strong marketing, prescribers and sellers may also go with the flow and prefer branded medicines.

In the end, it’s not the price tag but the quality and correctness of use that matters. Creating awareness helps people make informed choices and receive effective treatment without burning a hole in their pocket.

I think generic medicine is as good as brand medicines but with recent bans on many generic drugs seems to suggest otherwise. From my perspective it is a marketing tactic but if not then I don’t think brand formulations are very reliable either.

If people understand the facts and start relying on generic drugs from reliable manufacturers, it would be best. The biggest benefit is cost , which significantly improves patient compliance.

Advantages of Choosing Generic Medicine:

  • Cost-effective: Generic medicines are available at a very low price, making them affordable for everyone, especially those from lower-middle-class backgrounds. They are budget-friendly and have the same salt and composition as branded medicines, with the same IP/USP formula used in manufacturing.

  • Fixed pricing: The cost of most generic medicines is fixed as per the Drug Price Control Order (DPCO) by the Government.

  • Efficacy: Generic medicines provide almost the same effect as branded drugs, and their effectiveness is widely accepted by drug regulatory authorities and physicians.

  • Quality: Most generic drugs have good quality, similar to branded drugs, with minor differences in quality.

Disadvantages of Choosing Generic Medicine:

  • Risk of fake manufacturers: The lack of patent protection for generic drugs allows any pharmaceutical company to manufacture them, which can compromise quality and efficacy. Some fake companies manufacture generic drugs without following rules, using poor equipment, and lacking regulatory approval, often existing only on paper. This degrades the authenticity of generic drugs.

I think consumers have this misconception that costly branded medicines are more effective than Generics, when in reality they have almost same efficacy.

Generic medicines are developed after the patent of a branded medicine expires and are cheaper because they don’t have to bear costs of research.

Regulatory organizations require that generic medicines meet certain efficacy requirements before approving them for the market.

Through various schemes people are educated that Generics are also as effective as branded medicines.

Advantages of Generic medicines are as follows:

  1. They are cheaper than their branded alternatives.

  2. Under government schemes people can get generic medicines at cheaper prices.

Disadvantages:

  1. Some companies may try to cut cost during manufacturing leading to less effective products.
  1. Generic medicine is a cost effective version of brand name drug made after the patent expires. where as branded medicine is original version developed by pharmaceutical company.
  2. Branded medicine is expected to better in quality than generic and set bench marks for cost when compared to generics expected to provide same quality as branded ones.

Both deliver the same therapeutic benefits but opt for branded if generic cause side effects, lack availability or physician recommended cases other wise generics offer identical efficacy at lower cost

Generic medicines are cheaper alternatives to branded drugs while providing the same efficacy and safety, as they contain the same active ingredients and meet regulatory quality standards. Their main limitation is minor variation in inactive ingredients, which may affect a few sensitive patients. Overall, generics are a cost-effective and reliable choice for most treatments.

Generic medicines are similar to branded drugs in safety, efficacy and therapeutic effects. However, they are much cheaper than the branded ones.

Generic medicine are same as the branded ones, however due to the explicit marketing and the use of branded medicine since long makes people question the effectiveness of generic medicine which can be overcome with the increase in awareness through prescription of the former.

Generics are bioequivalent to branded drugs and pass the necessary regulatory requirements. They become available long after the invention is made, when the brand patent has expired. These make health care affordable and hence accessible.
