Even today less than 1 in 4 surgeons worldwide are women .
Do you think surgery still feels like a male- dominated field? Why is that so and what can we do to change that ?
Yes and that is mostly because of lack of work life balance in surgical fields
Yeah, this could be the potential reason behind this. Along with that I think, even most of the women itself think it as a male dominating field. So this mentality shift is important.
In my opinion, women tend to not go for surgery due to the slight impossibility of balancing work and family life.
It is far more different for a women to drop everything she takes care of at home-kids, family etc- and rush to the hospital for an emergency lap chole/appendectomy etc.
Having said that, there are still way more women in surgery this year than there were 5 years ago too.
The stats are turning gracefully in the direction of women off lately.
it needs more representation, mentorship, and inclusive opportunities now.
Work-life balance and still a bit of gender discrimination could be the reasons
True, this shift will happen gradually. We will have women taking up surgery and becoming successful in the near future.
Main reason is the work life balance issues. Women cannot imagine leaving their children and running to ot for a surgery midnight.. A male surgeon would hardly marry a female surgeon for the same reason ..
Yes, surgery still feels like a male-dominated field—and the numbers and lived experiences of women in the profession back that up. Despite women now making up about half of medical school graduates globally, fewer than 25% of surgeons are women, and the disparity is even more pronounced in certain surgical subspecialties
Work-life balance is the main issue
Because male are groomed to do outside work only but for female is a whole different story
That may be because of the Fixed mentality that its a man’s job like that, or may be the wore like balance. And I am sure the 1 in 4 surgeon is also will be from OG!!!
Absolutely agree. The demanding hours, gender stereotypes, and lack of mentorship often discourage women from pursuing surgery.
