Healing Eyes, Living a Fulfilling Life -Women in Ophthalmology

Recently there is a trend in many medical colleges of women residents entering ophthalmology.This can be as for various reasons-

  1. Ophthalmology- it is, in itself a surgical speciality branch - unlike general surgery( which needs further training after post graduation to be a super specialist)

  2. Work - life balance- It gives the satisfaction of both checking & operating on patients .It has fewer emergencies & a fixed OPD schedule, allowing women to spend valuable time with family.

  3. Need for ophthalmologists - as the aging population is increasing, there is increasing demand for better vision for more independent life

More women in ophthalmology can be an inspiration for women in giving vision to others &transforming lives.

Do you feel ophthalmology is truly a rewarding branch for women ?

This is a great observation. The increasing percentage of women in ophthalmology is changing the leadership dynamics of the field for the better. Having manageable, predictable hours doesn’t mean a compromise on ambition-it means preventing burnout, which allows women residents to build thriving private practices and lead academic research long-term.

I’ve mostly seen women opting for obs and gynae in mbbs . It’s good if they are considering other fields too.
