What causes nearly an epidemic of vitamin D and B12 deficiency

The two most important vitamins, D and B12, play a significant role in the proper functioning of the majority of our organs. Their deficiencies tend to accumulate over time and lead to a step towards serious illnesses. A significant number of recent studies have suggested that deficiencies of vitamin D and B12 are quite common, accounting for 82% of cases for vitamin D and 21 % for Vitamin B12.

The reason lies in the very basic routine of daily life. We have pushed ourselves towards an indoor environment and simultaneously more unwholesome food habits. This is the main reason behind the lack of many vitamins, and D and B12 are at the top rank. A collective long-term deficiency of these two vitamins may result in detrimental health issues.

The lack of vitamin D and B12 may be associated with the following symptoms:

  • Muscle weakness/cramps
  • Lethargic feeling
  • General Weakness
  • Felling dizzy
  • Tingling in extremities
  • Breathlessness
  • Nausea
  • Depressive symptoms
  • Bone weakness
  • Low energy level/unexplained fatigue
  • Mood swing

The deficiency of vitamin D and B12 has been found in all age groups, defying the rule of lower metabolism and absorption in elderly people. This makes it even more serious issue because the factor affecting the intake of these vitamins seems prevalent among all ages.

The factors responsible for the prevalence of vitamin D and B12 deficiencies among Indians:

  • Mostly being indoor in sunshine hours i.e., between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm.
  • Most Indians follow a pure vegetarian food habit
  • Less intake of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Acidity is a major health issue associated with many people, which further leads to less secretion of intrinsic factors required for the absorption of vitamin B12
  • Limited knowledge about these two vitamins in the general population
  • Covering the whole body while going out in sunshine due to several reasons like cultural and aesthetic reasons
  • Even well-educated people become ignorant towards vitamin insufficiency, which can further push them into vitamin deficiency

Both Vitamin D and B12 play the most important roles in our body functioning, like maintenance of bone health, muscle health, nervous system, and brain health. The levels of these two vitamins must be checked on a regular basis among all age groups. The regular checkup becomes even more important for individuals with:

  • Multimorbidity
  • Aging
  • Pernicious/megaloblastic Anaemia
  • Atrophic Gastritis
  • Problems associated with the brain and nervous system

Patients with medical conditions like type II diabetes and gastric issues should also go for regular vitamin D and B12 tests.

Being a little more conscious about our daily routine and regular tests that measure the levels of these vitamins would surely help us to get rid of such vitamin deficiencies.

many people underestimate about vitamin B and D but these vitamins are essential and helps to function major system of body also I would like to add one more detail there is one condition named pernicious anemia where low secretion of intrinsic factor leads to low absorption of vitamin B12.

Vitamin D and B12 deficiencies are indeed common and often go unnoticed because the symptoms are nonspecific and can easily be mistaken for fatigue or stress. Raising awareness, encouraging a balanced diet, sensible sun exposure, and testing individuals who are at higher risk can help identify deficiencies early and prevent long-term complications.

Yes, that’s true. I have already added this important point to the 4th bullet, reasons for low vitamin D and B12.

I think vitamin D and vitamin B12 deficiencies are becoming increasingly common.Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, muscles, and immunity, while vitamin B12 is crucial for nerve function and red blood cell production. Since the symptoms are often subtle at first, regular screening and timely treatment can help prevent long-term complications.

Between working indoors all day and processed diet trends, these deficiencies have become surprisingly universal. Fortification and routine screening are fast becoming essential rather than optional.

Yes, it will work.

Regular screening and trying to fill the nutritional gap with healthy food.

Very true. It’s very common, but most of us weren’t aware of it. Routine tests may help to change the scenario. Informative post. Thank you for sharing this post.

Vitamin D and B12 deficiencies are more common than we think, especially in vegetarians and people with limited sun exposure. Since the symptoms are often subtle or silent, many remain undiagnosed for years. Better awareness and timely screening can prevent long-term health complications.

Vitamin B12 and vitamin D deficiency are common among most people nowadays. They can cause various symptoms, such as fatigue, nausea, and tingling, that may be mistaken for other diseases. It is important to have regular tests for these vitamins and follow a balanced diet.

Yes, consciousness is important.

I could genuinely relate to this because I went through both vitamin D and B12 deficiency. For a long time, I ignored symptoms like constant fatigue, low energy, dizziness, and weakness, thinking they were just due to my busy schedule. Only after getting tested did I realize the actual cause. It taught me that we shouldn’t ignore persistent symptoms or assume they’re “normal.” Regular check-ups and timely treatment can make a huge difference.
