Imagine a woman comes to you saying she has no brain, no nerves, and no chest. What will you react to? This is exactly what happened when a French neurologist, Jules Cotard, came across a woman claiming all this in the 19th century.
Now imagine after waking up one day and truly believing that you have died or do not exist, believing that your body is gone, organs have stopped working, and you are already dead. This sounds like a weird dream, but it is a rare psychiatric disorder known as Cotard Syndrome.
In this disorder, an individual develops nihilistic delusions (false beliefs) that:
- They are dead
- They do not exist anymore.
- Their organs are missing, stolen, or decaying.
- The world itself no longer exists.
It is also called “Walking Corpse Syndrome.”
Cause:
This disorder is not a standalone disease; it is linked with other mental or neurological disorders, like
- Depression
- Schizophrenia
- Brain injury or tumors
Symptoms:
- Persistent belief of being dead
- Denial of body part or function
- Severe social withdrawal
- Refusal to eat or drink
- Feeling hopelessness
This condition sounds so unreal and like a movie scene, but it is reality. This condition reminds us that mental health is as important as physical health.
