Hospitals are built so that people can heal. They are places where compassion should be as important as clinical skills. Yet, behind the walls where lives are saved every day, another reality often exists. Long before stress and exhaustion take away empathy. There is actually something else that begins to erode this compassion. It is superiority, ego, and workplace politics.
Somewhere along the way, job titles become more important than people. A senior believes respect should be demanded instead of earned. A junior hesitates to ask a question because they fear being insulted. A nurse thinks twice before speaking up. An intern learns way too quickly that surviving the workplace sometimes feels more important than learning the profession .
Workplace politics is not always loud or obvious. It often hides in everyday interactions. It usually involves excluding a colleague from important discussions. Criticizing someone publicly but never actually appreciating them privately. These moments may seem insignificant but as the time passes they shape the culture of an entire workplace.
The irony is something which is impossible to ignore. Healthcare professionals dedicate their lives in serving strangers but they often forget to care for the people standing beside them.
Respect should never depend on designation. Everyone from the housekeeping staff to the consultant, contributes to patient care in ways which cannot be measured by rank alone.
The biggest threat to healthcare today is not only burnout or staff shortages. It is the gradual loss of humanity within the workplace itself. When respect disappears between colleagues, empathy eventually disappears for patients too.
Before asking how we can build better hospitals, perhaps we should ask ourselves a far more uncomfortable question:
Have we become too busy to be human ? OR Have we simply forgotten how to treat one another with humanity?
Technical expertise is essential in healthcare but kindness, respect and teamwork are what hold the entire system together. A workplace where people feel valued is not only better for healthcare professionals, it ultimately leads to better care for patients.
Very rightly explained, “Respect should never depend on designation”. This applies to both doctors and patients in the hospital. Humanity comes first every person in the hospital plays their respective roles in serving wellbeing of the patient. Workspace politics should be avoided and every person should be respected for their work.
I feel humans are both busy and, at the same time, have forgotten how to treat one another with humanity. Humans are very busy building their own lives, and in this entire process of uplifting themselves, they are losing the core values that truly make them human. A strange narrative where the nature around us is reminding us of who we are, but the irony is that humans still choose to ignore it in the end.
That’s so true, respect should not depend upon the designation of the staffs. It is to give respect to everyone at workplace. Talking about work place politics, it is common thing in every office and the one who survives it, fits perfectly to that work place. This problem could be controlled by promoting personal interaction and inclusivity at the work place.
This is the silent reality of every workspace. I think this mentality starts before they enter the work-life. In college, this group of people have started behaving like a politician. The education system just schooled us about how to chase marks. In this race, somewhere humanity is lost.
Being a Human is having empathy for other humans as well as other organisms too. To feel hurt when other organism gets hurted to feel what may have they going through. Organisms other than human have not developed such an neurological feelings for other it’s an God’w gift we have got. We must respect dignity of every individual in this universe and don’t let our moral fade away behind our professional living. As both can be managed to be protected somehow at same time. As we are Humans!
Correctly explained…Nowadays, AI is becoming more human-like, while humans are becoming less humane. It is really important for healthcare workplaces to create a friendly environment that enables healthcare professionals to provide effective patient care and build trust.
