Things to communicate with patients before starting any dental procedure

There are 5 very basic but very important things to communicate with your patient which will not only put themselves at ease but will also develop a trustworthy relationship between the doctor and patient.

  • What procedure you’re doing and why
  • Approximately how long the procedure will take
  • What they might experience during the procedure
  • When and how to signal any discomfort experienced during the procedure
  • Briefing about the post operative symptoms

Golden rule : clear communication = smoother procedure + happier patients.

Yes, To add to this giving them an idea about the cost when it comes to fixed or removable appliances or rct.

The practice of giving written document to the patients is sorely missing in India. This happened at a famous dental chain that I witnessed. They did a procedure and gave no paper/ document to the patient related to what was done.

Yes, clear communication builds trust — and when paired with proper written documentation like informed consent, it ensures patients fully understand their treatment, its prognosis, and actively participate in their care.

Clear and honest communication helps build trust and turns a nervous patient into a confident one. It truly makes every procedure smoother and every patient happier.
