- Start with a Friendly Introduction : Introduce yourself (be calm and confident) . Tell them to let you know if they feel uncomfortable at any point . This will help you build their trust in you and make them feel safe and comfortable.
- Follow the LEAP method : Listen , Empathize, Apologize (if needed), Plan :
• Listen attentively this will help you look for cues as to how the patient feel and what he or she is trying to imply in the conversation.
• Empathize with patients - You can say (I understand that many patients feel nervous during dental treatments. I will do my best to make you feel comfortable and address any concern you may have) - Explain every step clearly : Use simple language while discussing the procedure. Explain what you are doing, why it’s needed, what they might feel . This will make them feel relaxed .
- Give them control: Offer them a stop signal like raising their hand when they feel pain or fear .
- Don’t Rush: Be patient ,avoid rushing through procedures . Patient trust dentist who take their time .
- Use Encouraging words: You can say – “Great job, you’re doing well . Just a little more.’ This will help reduce their anxiety and help you finish the procedure smoothly.
- Be patient with elderly patients
- For children: Turn the appointment into a game : You can follow Tell-Show-Do Method.
- Help anxious patients feel safe: You can say –“Take a deep breath; we’ll go slowly.” Avoid saying “it won’t hurt”
- Document Everything: Patient behaviour throughout the procedure, patient complaints, record your steps, any advice given by staff, any difficulty faced during the procedure , final outcome, post-op instructions.
