Student Dentist Tips : How to Handle Challenging and Anxious Patients.

  1. Start with a Friendly Introduction : Introduce yourself (be calm and confident) . Tell them to let you know if they feel uncomfortable at any point . This will help you build their trust in you and make them feel safe and comfortable.
  2. Follow the LEAP method : Listen , Empathize, Apologize (if needed), Plan :
    • Listen attentively this will help you look for cues as to how the patient feel and what he or she is trying to imply in the conversation.
    • Empathize with patients - You can say (I understand that many patients feel nervous during dental treatments. I will do my best to make you feel comfortable and address any concern you may have)
  3. Explain every step clearly : Use simple language while discussing the procedure. Explain what you are doing, why it’s needed, what they might feel . This will make them feel relaxed .
  4. Give them control: Offer them a stop signal like raising their hand when they feel pain or fear .
  5. Don’t Rush: Be patient ,avoid rushing through procedures . Patient trust dentist who take their time .
  6. Use Encouraging words: You can say – “Great job, you’re doing well . Just a little more.’ This will help reduce their anxiety and help you finish the procedure smoothly.
  7. Be patient with elderly patients
  8. For children: Turn the appointment into a game : You can follow Tell-Show-Do Method.
  9. Help anxious patients feel safe: You can say –“Take a deep breath; we’ll go slowly.” Avoid saying “it won’t hurt”
  10. Document Everything: Patient behaviour throughout the procedure, patient complaints, record your steps, any advice given by staff, any difficulty faced during the procedure , final outcome, post-op instructions.

I still remember, during my school days I’ve undergone dental surgery. The surgeon was so sweet spoken and calm. Pain and anxiety was temporary but the impact he made was huge.

It is extremely important to “read” the patient. As we dont know what will be the mental state of the patient or the family. You just have to make sure that they understand each and every instructions carefully and precisely. The above mentioned points are an excellent way to learn about the etiquette to handle a patient in dental science

Explaining every step before you do it is the best thing to do.. This keep them informed and aware.

Break procedures into smaller parts, reassure them often, and stay patient throughout. Your confidence and gentle approach can transform a stressful visit into a comfortable experience.

Fear of the unknown is what causes anxiety in most patients. Calming the patient before any procedure is essential for proper cooperation and completion of the procedure. Explain the steps of the treatment to be done, along with the cost, before starting any procedure to reduce the patient’s anxiety.
