For a long time people thought that high blood pressure was something that only older people had to worry about.. Now doctors are seeing more and more young people, even those in their 20s and 30s coming in with high blood pressure readings. The problem is that young people do not usually check their blood pressure so they might not even know they have a problem until it has already caused damage to their body.
The Changing Face of Cardiovascular Risk
blood pressure means that the blood is pushing too hard against the walls of the arteries. This makes the heart work hard especially in younger people. Doctors are trying to figure out why this is happening to people. They are looking at things like:
-
The Stress of Working on a Computer: Sitting at a desk for a time not sleeping well and being stressed out all the time can make your blood pressure go up.
-
Eating Much Salt: A lot of the food we buy at stores and restaurants has much salt in it which can make your blood pressure go up.
-
Vaping and Drinking Much Caffeine: Using nicotine vapes and drinking too much caffeine can put a lot of stress on your heart.
Treating blood pressure in a 25-year-old is very different from treating it in a 65-year-old. Doctors have to think about how the medication will affect the person over the 40 or 50 years so they have to be very careful about what they prescribe. They also have to help the person make lifestyle changes.
Tomorrows Medical Mission
We cannot wait until young people start having heart problems before we do something. Doctors should check the blood pressure of every person who comes in. If we catch blood pressure early we can help prevent long-term damage to the heart, kidneys and brain.
Have you seen young people, with high blood pressure during your training and how do you explain to them why they need to take their medication every day even if they feel fine? Share your thoughts.
