High BP in Children: A Silent Threat

High blood pressure (BP) is no longer just an adult problem. Shockingly, even children as young as 7 years old are now being diagnosed with hypertension.

Research presented at the American Heart Association’s Hypertension Sessions 2025 shows that kids with high BP face a greater risk of heart disease and even early death before age 50.

In India, the numbers are rising fast—7% of children are already affected, and among obese kids, the risk jumps to 29%. Experts warn that most cases go unnoticed because regular BP checks in children are still rare.

Causes of High BP in Kids

  • Obesity & family history

  • Lack of physical activity
  • Junk, processed, salty foods

This is matter of concern. Children should be encouraged for good amount of physical activity and encouraged healthy eating. Disease at early stage of life is difficult to manage

That’s unfortunate to know. High BP in children often goes unnoticed because it’s considered an adult problem. Awareness among parents and schools can make a huge difference.

It is alarming to read about hypertension in children. More awareness on this issue needs to shared with parents and school so as to be able to prevent the rise in cases. Thanks for sharing ways to reduce the risks.

Hypertension in children is often secondary to an underlying disease or condition. Hypertension can often only be prevented in as much as the underlying condition can be prevented. Kidney disease is a main cause of high B.P. and hypertension in children and obesity is too one such cause .

In today’s time, lifestyle and food habits play a major role in the early occurrence of diseases. Children at this age should develop healthy eating habits and engage in physical activities to build a healthy future.
