The Silent Rise of PCOD: Why More Women Are Being Affected Than Ever

In recent years, have you noticed that there has been a noticeable increase in cases of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome(PCOS)? Earlier, it was a rare disorder, but now affecting a significant number of young women. It is more commonly seen in women living in an urban lifestyle. But how in these year PCOD has increased so much?

Why Are PCOD Cases Increasing?

  1. Sedentary Lifestyle: The modern lifestyle involves long sitting, less physical activity, and increased screen time. This leads to weight gain and insulin resistance, both contributors to PCOD.
  2. Unhealthy Dietary Habits: Increased consumption of junk food, high sugar intake, and more processed food in the diet all lead to obesity and hormonal imbalance.
  3. Rising stress levels: Modern life is more stressful than the life of our ancestors. Earlier, women usually only looked after the household and farms, but now, in addition, women are often working jobs as well, and continuing the household work, this workload increases the stress. Chronic stress affects hormonal balance by increasing cortisol levels, which disrupts ovulation and worsens PCOD symptoms.
  4. Sleep disturbance: Studies have shown that women need 1-1.5 hours more sleep than men. Irregular sleep cycles, poor sleep quality, and many times night shifts interfere with hormone regulation, contributing to PCOD.
  5. Genetics: Genetics plays an important role, as women with a family history of PCOD are more likely to develop it.

What To Do:

As it is a lifestyle disorder, there is no one cure for it, but it can be managed by some modifications

  1. Healthy Diet: Eating low glycemic index food, less fat, avoid processed food. Eat more fruits and vegetables

  2. Regular exercise: Go for a walk or run for 30 minutes daily. Small steps daily help in improving health in longer go. These small exercises will help in regulating weight and maintaining hormonal balance.

  3. Stress-free life: Make a positive mindset, indulge in activity which give you joy. Enjoy life, nature, and the world around you. Keep yourself positive and hang around positive people who help you with life.

The rise of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a wake-up call. It reflects how modern lifestyle choices are directly impacting women’s health. With awareness, early diagnosis, and a simple lifestyle, PCOD can be changed and made more manageable

Calling it purely a “lifestyle disorder” might be a bit too simplistic. Lifestyle factors definitely influence symptoms, but research shows that hormonal imbalances and genetic predisposition are also central to conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Even women with active routines and balanced diets can develop it, which suggests there’s more at play than just modern habits. Maybe it’s better seen as a mix of lifestyle, biology, and environment rather than one single cause.

Very true, it is closely related to genetic factors, and our modern lifestyle pattern worsens it. I agree that it is a mix of lifestyle, biology, and environmental causes. But out of all of these causes, one that we can easily modify and try to control the symptoms is by slightly modifying our lifestyle.

PCOD is definitely multifactorial.

As rightly said, its prevalence unfortunately is way more in the urban population due to increased stress, sedentary lifestyle and over consumption of processed foods. But I have observed several lean women with healthy lifestyle suffering from PCOS. Maybe blame the genetics, insulin resistance or chronic inflammation.:dna: :syringe: :face_with_bags_under_eyes:

It’s way more complex than it looks. Thank you for shedding light on this topic @Parriza_Patras :slightly_smiling_face:

Undoubtedly, PCOS cases have been rising over the years—very well explained etiology, diagnosis, and management

However, it’s also increasingly seen in smaller towns and tier-2 cities, where awareness, timely diagnosis, and proper management are still limited :warning: This gap definitely needs more attention :pushpin:

Exactly, it’s not just about the lifestyle or any one causing factor, but a combination of multiple factors leading to such diseases. Thank you for sharing your views.
