Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is becoming increasingly prevalent among the young Indian women, becoming one of the most widespread yet underdiagnosed forms of hormonal disorders at present. Teenagers and women in early twenties are getting exposed to what was once perceived as a state of adulthood.
The changes in modern lifestyle are significant. Sedentary lifestyle, sleeps disorders, chronic stress, improper diet patterns and progressive insulin resistance afflict the hormonal equilibrium. Additional aggravation of metabolic health is brought about by excess consumption of processed food, sugar and refined carbohydrates and the endocrine disrupting chemicals of the environment further increase the risk.
PCOS can be exhibited via irregular menstrual cycles, gain of weight, acne, excessive hair growth, mood swings, and fertility. The numerous symptoms are not immediately diagnosed and treated since many are treated as normal hormonal changes. PCOS is untreated and predisposes to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, infertility, and mental issues.
There is a need to be aware early on, change the way of life, screen on time, and be guided by the medical advice. PCOS can be controlled–but only in case of timely recognition and treatment in a comprehensive manner.
Do you believe that young women should be encouraged to undertake regular hormonal screening in order to identify PCOS at an early stage?
