The Solapur City Crime Branch has arrested eight people, including a resident medical officer and hospital staff, for allegedly operating a fake disability certificate racket linked to Solapur Civil Hospital. Investigators claim the accused issued bogus benchmark disability certificates and approved Unique Disability ID (UDID) cards without mandatory medical board examinations, allegedly charging applicants lakhs of rupees in return. The investigation has also raised questions about how forged documents, fake identities, and unauthorised access to official approval systems allegedly enabled fraudulent certificates to be issued.
As authorities widen their probe and scrutinise thousands of disability certificates issued over the past 18 months, one question remains: How can India’s disability certification process be made more transparent and tamper-proof without making it harder for genuine beneficiaries to access the support they are entitled to?
