Sexual violence is not only a legal issue but also a serious medical, psychiatric, public health concern.
Forensic medicine studies the psychological, behavioral, and biological factors associated with such crimes to improve prevention, justice, and survivor care.
Factors Associated with Sexual Offences
Aggression and crime
Lack of empathy
Distorted understanding of consent
Substance abuse
Antisocial personality traits
poor impulse control
Psychosexual Disorders in Forensic medicine
Exhibitionism
Voyeurism
Frotteurism
Sexual sadism
Hypersexuality
According to NCBI StatPearls on Paraphilia and Paraphilic disorders, these conditions involve persistent abnormal sexual interests, but not every individual with such disorders becomes an offender.
Psychiatric Perspective
psychiatric suggests that many sexual offenders may show traits such as impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, antisocial behavior, compulsive tendencies or impaired empathy. However sexual violence is often driven more by power, control, anger, and social conditioning rather than sexual desire alone. Mental illness should not be used to justify criminal behavior.
Role of Forensic medicine
Medico-legal examination
DNA evidence collection
Injury documentation
Toxicology analysis
Psychological assessment
Impact on survivors
Sexual violence can lead to PTSD, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and long-term emotional trauma, making it a major public health issue as well
Understanding sexual violence through medicine and psychiatry helps society approach the issue scientifically - not to excuse offenders, but to improve prevention, rehabilitation, awareness about consent, and survivor -centered justice.
Do you think society focuses enough on the psychological and preventive aspects of sexual violence, or only reacts after the crime occurs?
Very True. This concerning issue is less spoken and people are very less aware about psychological aspects. It is very disturbing to know that our highly educated society show regards only after the act. There should be strict law against this type of act. And there should be awareness about the psychological , emotional therapies for victims. Because body can heal , but the trauma remains.
Even after reinforcement of legal ammendments , we get to encounter such mishaps, due to lack of control at individual level, to address such mishaps, we need to educate our younger generations about consent , major role is played by parents to educate their children on sex education, consent , addictions ,morals . Educate and monitor such behaviour since early childhood and all adolescents should be taught sex education on mass basis ,even if they are from any background ranging from an illiterate to an highly qualified professionals, everyone has to be involved.young gals and guys should be closely monitored for any irrational behaviour or psychosocial tendencies.social media platform, movies should minimise their sexual content.
Sexual violence in India is a serious problem that affects many women and children. It includes harassment, abuse, rape, stalking, and unsafe behavior in public or private places. Many victims are afraid to speak because of fear, shame, or lack of support. India has made stricter laws and increased awareness about women’s safety, but more education, respect for consent, faster justice, and safer environments are still needed to protect people and reduce such crimes.
Indeed. Society does not focus enough on these aspects. There needs to be awareness about these issues.Society should be open to discussions on these issues in order to understand certain sensitive aspects which remain neglected.Preventive measures are being taken however the crimes against women are still on rise which is alarming.
It’s very disheartening to read everyday news about some sort of sexual offence towards men and women alike. After some discussions about this topic, I’ve come to realise how deeply stigmatized it is. I remember reading somewhere that for the accused, it’s ‘innocent until proven guilty’; however, for the victim, it’s ‘guilty until proven innocent.’ Couldn’t get this out of my mind, because of such reasons we are failing to see the deep-seated fear and shame a victim feels, and how difficult it is to talk about it without any fear of judgement.
Perhaps including the psychological awareness alongside medical rationale could help us tackle the stigma. The perpetrators can seek counselling even before they fall into such unfortunate crimes. Maybe if they see there are people ready to help them overcome the psychological illness, they can openly choose to get better. Maybe what we are lacking is the approach to eradicate the root cause of sexual violence just as you mentioned using psychiatry and medical sciences. Maybe before a victim ends up becoming a victim, we can provide facilities to the people who end up becoming perpetrators, so that we save not only the victim but prevent creation of a criminal.
Yes, this is a very important issue. Sexual violence is a major concern in India, especially for women and children. Unfortunately, many cases are not reported because some peoples feel fear, shame, or social pressure. Forensic medicine and psychiatric evaluation are both important for the evidence collection and also to understand the physiological impact on the survivor.
This is very disheartening that basic humanity is absent in some people, and due to the slow action by government and corrupted system many of this people does not get any punishment due to their political connection, there is very high need of strong punishment to such people regardless of their connections, money, power.
This is a pressing concern in our country.societal efforts still lean heavily towards reacting after after sexual violence rather than preventing it. Despite strict laws the overall incidents increasing in our country. And al lot of incidents go unreported because of shame and fear . Society blames victim rather than perpetrators.
Can understanding the psychological and social roots of sexual violence help create better prevention strategies, or does society still avoid these conversations?
When ever a new case of sexual violence shocks the nation we see public outrage. It becomes a topic of discussion everywhere, be it the social media, news channels or our political leaders . Though this collective outrage is definitely necessary but it shows we are more focused at punishment of the crime rather than focusing at its prevention. We need to understand prevention begins in our classrooms and homes. Education is the most important preventive tool. Children should be taught about consent, boundaries and respect for others.
Rather than focusing on what the victim might have done wrong we need to focus on why the guilty did the crime. A change in mindset in extremely necessary to curb such heinous offences.
Thanks for raising such an important topic. I believe it is a worldwide issue, and nowadays it is not restricted to a specific gender. Speaking up more about this sensitive topic will help create awareness and can open doors for seeking early treatment and preventing future consequences.
This is very important topic in this generation. Generally all pupil react when this type of case occur, but after few days same incident occur once again. Punishment for sexual violence should be more strict to prevent further violence. Parents and society should educate there childrens about these.
Sexual violence is still considered a taboo in India . We fail as a society when men and women from all age groups and walks of life hesitate to come forward to seek help regarding sexual violence in homes, neighborhood, workplaces etc. This plight is because we provide education and awareness through movies and other platforms on how sexual violence happens, we showcase the cases like a documented scenario but we fail to concentrate on how to look for signs / warning behaviour around us that one might fall prey to sexual violence in our life . We also fail to educate people on what to do , how to cope up with the horrifying experience and whom to approach for pyschological concerns after they faced with a situation like sexual violence.
Unless the victim isn’t safe.. there is still a distant future for the rights of the accused regarding the psychosocial etiology.. prevention aspect definitely but target population is School children right from teaching them good touch bad touch to anti social or borderline personalities to be tracked through their adolescence. We need better rehabilitation for the youngsters especially those who aren’t in the system (out of school children/adolescent). Most often root cause lies with certain childhood trauma carried forward or substance abuse. It’s a sad state.
I believe that society, for the most part, fails to focus on either the psychological or the preventive aspects of sexual violence. Instead, the reaction is almost entirely reactive and temporary.
When the crime occurs, it becomes a “Talkable topic” for a week. There is brief period of news coverage and public protest, but as soon as the news cycle move on to a different headline, the public often forgets. The society moves on, while the survivors & their families are left to fight for justice alone. Eventually, even the families become exhausted because the legal process is slow and true justice is rare.
Furthermore, the lack of safety is a deep-seated issue. In India, many feel unsafe even within their own homes or circles of trust. It is also vital to recognize that “Sexual Violence is not gender-specific” while women are disproportionately affected, men also face harassment and violence from both genders. We can’t blame just one group; we must acknowledge that all survivors are suffering. Until we shift from temporary outrage to permanent preventive education and strict legal accountability, there is no true freedom from this violence.
Society reacts when an incidence had occurred and it has been brought to limelight. Many incidents go unreported due to shame and backward mindset . Understanding the multiple aspects can bring a significant change in the number of incidents. Talking about this problem in family should not be a taboo as has been seen in many families, efforts should be on prevention of such incidences rather than reacting later. Also , I personally feel aec education should be a part of curriculum of school. Awareness campaigns should be carried out in public and focused groups. Small efforts on regular basis can bring drastic results!
Most Disheartening thing is denying and hiding in the name of ’ What will people say? ’ by our own mothers, family members. No one can imagine how difficult it must for that person to confess all those things. instead of acknowledging, confessing and seek judicial help for punishment, they are ignored. Not to mention, the Flashbacks they might be getting. PTSD is not something that should be let go of easily. Not to mention there is no age limit, species, and gender is spared by the Abuser. So it’s of dire importance to understand Psychology and helping the victim in any manner required. And importance of the change in upbringing child with different perspectives is the need. Somewhere objectify a women or a child or an animal and most importantly to act on that thought is major gap between the morals. And it’s not just the matter of mentality it’s actually a psychiatric illness. Hence, as a society and a human one should not forget to be more kind towards the victims. Rather than making them feel responsible, the Abuser, and make them suffer and ashamed in living their life. They had to go through all this along with Depression, Anxiety, many chronic illness. Therefore as a society and a healthcare professional we should be more responsible.
