In many medical and legal contexts, why is the accused often assumed to be male and the victim female β and how can we approach such topics more objectively and inclusively in our education and practice?β
You are right! Culturally- ingrained! Naturally, this needs to change.
Historical bias is another reason β Medical and legal systems were built with such frameworks leading to this situation
I feel that dynamic has changed over time. I hear my mother explain certain scenarios when she was in med college. Though slowly, there have been changes that we base medico-legal situations on evidences and facts now much more than before. With time things will improve for sure.
Anyone can be a victim or an offender, itβs important we donβt let stereotypes guide how we learn or work
You are right.
Well, I donβt know how to put this in proper words but, it could be the mentality against the innocent. Well both these places are neutral as it can fit anyone of any age or sex.
Itβs a deep-seated, harmful societal bias. We must actively challenge these assumptions. Focusing strictly on individual facts and use gender neutral language in all our education and practice.
