A new term called as “ELEVATED BLOOD PRESSURE” , has been introduced by 2024 ESC Hypertension guideline ,defined as systolic BP of more than 120-129 mm of Hg and diastolic of 70- 89 mm Hg.
It improves lead time in hypertension and prevents diagnostic delay .
The goal is to work on life style modification like DASH diet ,sodium reduction, regular exercise, weight management , limited alcohol , stress reduction and smoking cessation. So that it cannot progress to hypertension.
What are your opinion on regular BP measurement for everyone. Do you think it will help us to control this “Silent killer”?
Yes, it will help in controlling hypertension. As people don’t understand when they are having any such problems and its too late when checked. With this people will be in regular check.
Regular blood pressure measurement is highly beneficial, as hypertension is often asymptomatic and termed the “silent killer.” Routine monitoring enables early detection, timely intervention, and better lifestyle or medical management, which can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney complications.
Thus prevention is always better than cure! All necessary lifestyle modifications can help you to attend the necessary normals in life, avoiding disease conditions.
Yes, regular BP checks can help catch problems early. It gives people time to make lifestyle changes before it turns into hypertension specially in adults.
Great post, The 2024 ESC guidelines introduce a new category called “elevated blood pressure” a systolic reading of 120–129 mm Hg or diastolic 70–89 mm Hg to promote early action against hypertension. Lifestyle tweaks like the DASH diet, cutting sodium, exercising, managing weight, reducing alcohol, and stress relief are key to stopping high blood pressure before it starts.
But there’s more happening globally: the 2025 AHA/ACC guidelines urge starting treatment earlier at 130/80 mm Hg for high-risk adults and using tools like PREVENT to guide personalized care whether through medicine or better daily habits.
Yes because at 140/80 mm of Hg there were already structural changes in cardiovascular system which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality.
Refining blood pressure targets is crucial in modern medicine, as a “one-size-fits-all” approach may not benefit every patient. Individualized targets, based on age, comorbidities, and cardiovascular risk, can improve outcomes while minimizing adverse effects. It reflects a shift toward more personalized and evidence-based patient care.
Regular blood pressure monitoring represents a cost-effective public health strategy. Early detection of elevated BP allows timely lifestyle interventions, thereby reducing the progression to hypertension and lowering the long-term risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
The guidelines are changing but we also need evidence specific for Indian population, many of the changes in protocols and guidelines are brought after studies specific to caucasians and males. Blood pressure and hypertension is very different in Africans and Asians especially where we even have central obesity and Diabetes. A very co morbid state, hence it’s important to create personalized tailored treatment protocols and programs should focus on large scale region specific studies and evidence.
