Hypertension and Management:Patient Education and Awareness

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a condition where the force of blood against the artery walls is higher than normal. It is also called the “silent killer” as it may not show obvious symptoms but can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, and other complications if uncontrolled.

Keeping blood pressure within the target range helps:
• Reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
• Protect the kidneys, heart, brain and eyes.
• Improve overall quality of life.

Even if you feel well, hypertension can cause hidden damage to your body over time.

Lifestyle Measures to Manage Hypertension

  • DASH Diet should be followed.
  • Regular Exercise for at least 30 minutes should be performed everyday.
  • Manage weight.
  • Limit Alcohol and Quit Smoking.
  • Practice stress management like yoga, medication, breathing exercises.

Medication Adherence

  • Take your blood pressure medicines exactly as prescribed.
  • Do not skip doses even if you feel well.
  • Inform your doctor about side effects or if you are taking other medicines.
  • Regular check-ups help adjust your treatment if needed.
  • Report side effects and the medication history to the doctor.

Monitoring and Follow-up

  • Measure your blood pressure at home if possible and keep a record.
  • Visit your doctor regularly to monitor your condition.
  • Early detection of changes helps prevent complications.

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience:

  • Severe headache
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vision changes
  • Weakness or numbness on one side of the body.
