Recently, very popular social media influencer Sydney Towle died of cholangiocarcinoma on August 5, 2026, at the age of 26. She was battling stage 4 cancer for more than 3 years.
What is cholangiocarcinoma?
It is a rare type of cancer that forms in bile ducts. There are 3 types.
- Intrahepatic: Forms in the bile duct branches within the liver.
- Perihilar (Hilar): Starts outside the liver where ducts exit.
- Distal: Forms outside the liver in ducts closer to the small intestine.
What are the symptoms of cholangiocarcinoma?
- Jaundice.
- Intensely itchy skin.
- Dark urine and pale or clay-coloured stools. Upper abdominal pain or swelling.
- Unexplained weight loss and fatigue.
What are the causes of bile cholangiocarcinoma?
The exact cause of cholangiocarcinoma isn’t clear yet. But the factors that increase the chance of this disease are
- Genetic mutations in bile duct cells.
- Long-term irritation, swelling, or damage to the ducts.
- Chronic liver disease (cirrhosis or hepatitis B and C).
Can anyone survive cholangiocarcinoma?
Technically, it is possible, but it has a very low survival rate of 10% to 25%.

- Surgery
- Chemotherapy and Radiation
- Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy
Is there any vaccine for cholangiocarcinoma?
No vaccine for cholangiocarcinoma is available yet. But development of an mRNA vaccine is under trial.
Precautions:
Cholangiocarcinoma is a very silent and rapidly spreading disease. So, taking some preventive measures can reduce the chances, such as
- Quit smoking.
- Proper treatment of chronic liver disease.
After the diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma, Sydney was spreading awareness among her followers by using her presence on social media. Familiarity with rare diseases can reduce fear among people and may help in early detection of the cancer. Hopefully, modern science may find a cure for cancer, which may save people like Sydney in the future.
