PCOS now has a new name : How will it improve patient care?

PCOS(Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) is one of the most common conditions in Indian women with nearly 1 in 5 women being diagnosed with this condition.

Traditionally PCOS was associated with the presence of multiple small cysts or follicles in the ovaries , irregular periods and elevated androgens. However it does not completely reflect all the complex metabolic and hormonal changes. PCOS is more than just ovarian cysts. Individuals who are diagnosed with PCOS are at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease , type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia.

Considering the systemic effects experts have renamed PCOS to PMOS(Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome), this name better reflects all the hormonal and metabolic changes that would occur. This would improve patient care by not only treating the cysts or reproductive condition but also overall management and preventive measures that would be taken in order to reduce the cardiovascular risk, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia.

Do you think renaming PCOS would improve patient care or increasing awareness about the condition is more helpful? Share your opinion on this.

I think renaming was a good step, now its name actually explains what this problem is, not just focusing on cyst in the ovaries but its cause and effect lies in metabolic and endocrine disturbances as well.

i think renaming it will somewhere help in early diagnosis , usually people avoid certain symptoms initially and by the time they go and seek medical help, this disease has already progressed in the body , making the reversal more difficult.

I don’t think so changing the name can shift it’s effect , Because hoth symptoms ate like similar but the fact is in PCOS cysts are mainly form as smaller particle form and in pmos it’s also same just shifting the name doesn’t gurantee the condition of improvement.

In my opinion the issue does not lie in the name but lies in lack of awareness. Many educated women and even those in under developed areas are not familiar with PCOS . Renaming it may not entirely have a greater impact. It might to some extent contribute to better understanding.

Increasing awareness about the condition is more helpful. Many women are unaware of the condition , they delay treatment and investigations. So, proper awareness in right setups and situation can bring better results

Changing the name of PCOS was very much needed because the old term was misleading. It made many of us believe that cysts are the primary cause, while PCOS is actually a complex hormonal and metabolic condition. A better and more accurate name can help spread awareness, reduce confusion, and improve understanding of the disorder.
