The Misunderstood Side of Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)

When people think of Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, they often associate it with irregular periods, weight gain, or acne. However, PMOS goes far beyond visible symptoms. For many individuals, it is an emotional and mental turmoil that affects daily life in ways that are often overlooked. What makes PMOS even more misunderstood is that it varies greatly between individuals, with each person experiencing a different combination of physical, emotional, and metabolic challenges.

Some individuals may struggle with severe acne, weight fluctuations, or excessive hair growth, while others may face infertility concerns, hormonal imbalances, and mental distress. One of the most significant aspects of Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome is that it affects both the physical and mental well-being of an individual. For many, it can take the form of emotional turmoil, severe anxiety, low self-esteem, and constant struggles with body image.

The damaging influence of social media on Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome has created confusion among many individuals. From extreme diet trends to misleading information and restrictive advice, social media often promotes guilt and shame rather than encouraging a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

Another major concern that is often overlooked is the relationship between PMOS and insulin resistance. In many individuals, PMOS can increase the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes and other metabolic complications over time.

Rather than reducing PMOS to “just a hormonal” imbalance, it should be approached with great care, proper medical guidance, sustainable habits and empathy towards those who are experiencing it.

PMOS is not just your typical “irregular period”; it is a complex disorder that can deeply impact both physical health and mental state.

I would like to ask you,

Why do we normalize the emotional struggles associated with PMOS instead of addressing them?
