OSTEOARTHRITIS AND MISCONCEPTIONS

WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS

Osteoarthritis is a (common nowadays) condition that is progressive in nature and is characterized by degeneration of cartilage, causing pain, reduced mobility, and stiffness.

CAUSES:

  • AGE—As age increases, bones get weaker, and there is more risk of developing osteoarthritis.

  • BODY WEIGHT—More body weight causes more increase in pressure on knees and ultimately causes more wear and tear.

  • INJURY—Any major injury also causes the disturbance with shock-absorbing structures.

  • OVERUSE—More use/repetitive use of certain movement causes –more stress on joints and again resulting in wear and tear.

  • GENETICS/GENDER—These include all the hereditary factors, and women are more prone to this compared to men.

MISCONCEPT

  • Many people think that only surgery is the option, and they fear surgery. There are a lot of good treatment approaches available, like physiotherapy.

  • Surgery depends on the grade of osteoarthritis and its severity.

  • Physiotherapy not only consists of exercises but also lifestyle changes and postural advice.

  • Use of medicines, supportive devices, and painkiller injections as additions is not helpful.

It’s good to consult your concerned doctor, physician, orthopedist, or physiotherapist for better treatment and a better outcome, rather than just self-assumptions.

Have you ever seen such patients, and what was your guidance to them? How have you approached this condition as a professional?

This article clears up some common misunderstandings about osteoarthritis. It’s important to know that surgery isn’t the only option — conservative treatments like physiotherapy, lifestyle changes, and tailored exercises play a big role in managing symptoms without unnecessary invasive approaches. Thanks for emphasizing that consulting a clinician for individualized guidance can lead to better outcomes than relying on assumptions.

OA cases are very common in old age people and is a common case in OPD. Many people think about only taking medications. More holistic methods with proper diet and exercises will also be an added advantage.
