A large global study with 894 African children and teens (Cameroon, Uganda, and South Africa) just rattled our textbook definition of diabetes. 65% of the participants HAD type 1 diabetes WITH NO usual autoantibodies or genetic markers we normally link to it. even here in the U.S., 15% of Black American teens displayed similar trends.Might this be a non-autoimmune form of type 1 diabetes β one that is more linked to heritage and environmental exposure? This flips everything on its head β from diagnosis to treatment, particularly in underrepresented groups.
What do you think?
-
Did you ever think type 1 diabetes was possible without autoimmunity?
-
Should India rethink its diagnostic criteria by ancestry or environment?
-
What do you think this will mean for future research?
