Stem cell therapy for diabetes has made a groundbreaking achievement in China. A 25-year-old woman with type 1 diabetes (also known as insulin-dependent or juvenile diabetes) underwent a trial where her own pluripotent stem cells were used to derive islet cells from her fat cells. These cells were then injected back into her abdomen. Remarkably, within 75 days, she no longer required insulin injections. In fact, it’s been over a year, and she remains insulin-independent.
This breakthrough highlights the potential of stem cell therapy in treating type 1 diabetes. The use of a patient’s own cells reduces the risk of rejection and opens up new possibilities for regenerative medicines.
