Myth Debunked: The Truth About Diabetes and Its Management

A recent Times of India article breaks down five widespread misconceptions about diabetes:

1. “Eating too much sugar causes diabetes.”

– Sugar itself doesn’t directly cause diabetes. Type 1 is autoimmuneand Type 2 is influenced by genetics, overall diet, weight, and lifestyle .

2. “Diabetics can’t eat carbs or sweets.”

– They can….if consumed in moderation and balanced within a personalized diet plan .

3. “Only older people get diabetes.”

– False. Type 1 often begins in youth; an increasing number of children and teens are now being diagnosed with Type 2 due to lifestyle changes .

4. “No symptoms means diabetes isn’t serious.”

– Not true…..diabetes is often silent but causes significant organ damage over time even without symptoms .

5. “If sugar levels normalize, medication can stop.”

– Dangerous! Medication should continue unless a doctor advises otherwise .

Why this matters:

These myths often lead to delayed diagnosis or improper self-care.

What misconceptions about diabetes have you come across? and how can we spread better awareness?

Many people around us still believe myths like “diabetes only happens if you eat sweets” or “if sugar levels are normal, you’re cured.” These wrong ideas make people careless and delay proper treatment. I feel the best way to spread awareness is through simple health talks, social media posts in local languages, and by encouraging people with diabetes to openly share their real experiences. That way, others will understand it better and take it seriously.
