Mango:A Seasonal Superfood OR Chemical Concern

Mango is rich in vitamins, antioxidants, fiber, and digestive enzymes that support immunity, eye health, skin, heart, and digestion. It contains Vitamin C, Vitamin A, carotenoids, polyphenols, natural sugars, and hydration-supporting nutrients — making it one of the most nutritionally valuable seasonal fruits.

What Makes Mango a “Seasonal Superfood”?

Although “superfood” is not a scientific term, it refers to foods exceptionally rich in health-supporting compounds. Mango qualifies because it provides:

  • High Vitamin C for immunity

  • Vitamin A & carotenoids for vision and skin

  • Fiber for digestion

  • Antioxidants that help reduce oxidative stress

  • Natural energy with relatively low calories

Research suggests mango contains over 20 vitamins and minerals along with several bioactive antioxidant compounds.

Why Seasonal Fruits Matter

Traditionally grown, naturally ripened seasonal fruits are often fresher and nutritionally mature. Mango also plays an important role during summer by helping hydration, energy balance, and appetite support.

Reality of the “Fast Growth” Agricultural World

Modern agriculture faces pressure from:

  • Rapid urban demand

  • Export markets

  • Supermarket supply chains

  • Consumer demand for shiny, perfect-looking fruits

  • Climate stress and storage challenges

Because of this, many mangoes today are:

  • harvested before natural maturity,

  • artificially ripened during storage,

  • heavily sprayed to improve appearance and shelf life.

This does not mean every mango is unsafe.

The Concern Around Artificial Ripening

Some traders illegally use chemicals like calcium carbide for rapid ripening. Such chemically ripened mangoes may sometimes contribute to:

  • nausea

  • stomach irritation

  • gastric discomfort

  • headache

  • digestive irritation.

This becomes especially relevant during summer, when many hospitals and OPDs report increased gastric complaints and digestive disturbances.

In the race for faster production, are we slowly compromising the true essence of seasonal eating?
