Lecturer Proposes to Student in Class — Where Do We Draw the Line?

You know the thing is people assume a lot of things and misunderstand. people thinking the other person is giving signals and just confront it without directly talking about the matter is wrong and matters like this should go more viral so that people understand about consent and understanding.

This was really worrying. A professional boundaries should be set between professionals, specifically in education system. Although issue can be handled through legal way, not through violence. Students safety and their respect are concerning factors in such situations.

Yes this is something need attention work place are not safe i have heard but then this classroom. Have people forget how to behave

There is this orthodox saying, keep Professional and Personal Life saperately. What students did, is one thing but a lecturer was only responsible for warning the students and informing the institute. The institution is obviously responsible to handle such pre mature cases to maintain its integrity and reputation.

It is a gross violation of professional ethics and boundaries. Although this behavior of the lecturer is not appropriate, violence should not be justified. These issues must be done in a proper institutional and legal avenue in order to make them accountable and provide a safe academic atmosphere.

A teacher and students is based on trust and professionalism and crossing this line may break their confidence and learning environment .

Few things being shown in the media is not wrong, But the way of delivering the things can be improved

The right or a wrong decision should be given by a competent authorities such as college council or government bodies, after running the transparent investigation.

I wish the media being the fourth pillar of the constituency serve the clear and transparent news to the common people.

And this is a really best example of how people in nature take advantage of a personal boundary. In a professional forum, confessions of personal feelings are being normalised in such a way that professionalism is being questioned here, Legal standards shows how a situation handled professionally here. When professionalism is at question here how will the legal channels work?

This raises important concerns about ethics and laws followed in academic institutions. Student safety is important, and this is a good remainder to be fair, while dealing with problems.

I feel both their reaction were unjustified: The professor proposing a student in the class as well as the students beating the teacher in retaliation. Obviously a teacher whom the students trust and look up to engaging in such activities definitely needs to be looked into by the college authorities. At the same time, students mobbing the teacher for it is not justified either.

The part that ponders for me the question of justifiable action, or action through formal channels, is the student’s courage. She didn’t delay a moment or shy away from bringing this up in the forum when the professor publicly proposed to her. She stood on her own two feet and raised her voice for herself. She didn’t let a professor shame her before an audience, and that’s something every woman should practice and hold for themselves.

Yes.. student reaction justified. Professor crossed the professional boundaries… institution need take actions against these actions.

Although students’ reaction is not justified at any level. However, the lecturer himself is the guardian of ethics, discipline, and student rights. When the protector himself becomes the evil, I don’t know what other route to take for justice.

Unprofessional behaviours are never justified when you belong to such profession be it from the teacher or the student. A teacher should know the difference between student showing respect or interest. While sometimes students too overstep boundaries in order to get academic benefits which can sometimes lead to such situations. most importantly these type of matters shouldn’t be done in professional environment.

Definitely a result of the polluted mind of the lecturer, this situation could’ve been prevented had the lecturer paid any heed to disciplining and restraining himself and his position of authority.

It’s an incredibly hard position for a female student to be in given that such cases aren’t given second thoughts in Indian institutions along with the huge power imbalance between a lecturer and a student.

Such individuals who abuse their authority must be condemned .

While the students anger is understandable, resorting to physical assault is not the correct way to handle this situation. Such incidents can shift the focus away from the core issue at hand. At the same time, the professor needs to be held accountable as in a medical college where senior-junior hierarchy plays a big role, failure to take action can create an unsafe environment for students.

Teachers in our society enjoy widespread respect, but incidents like these tarnish the entire profession. Professional boundaries must be respected and should be taken care of.

After RG kar hospital rape and murder case, now comes this another inhumanity that completely shows urgent need for strict actions in all the institutions. These cases telling us that the safety and boundaries are still ignored.

while its a breach of trust on the teacher’s part to even think about being involved with a student, disrupting the dynamics of educational institute, but at the same time, violence, in any form should have no place where people trust and send their children to, to chase their dreams, where people come to earn their livelihoods. In fact, if a teacher can face violent reactions in an institution, with disciplinary rules in action, so can any student, making it an unsafe place to be.

Professional boundaries are something that needs to be emphasized in every institute. There should be a professional board handling this type of situation. Unethical behaviours should be highlighted and strict action should be taken against violators.
