Lecturer Proposes to Student in Class — Where Do We Draw the Line?

Professional boundaries are something that needs to be emphasized in every institute. There should be a professional board handling this type of situation. Unethical behaviours should be highlighted and strict action should be taken against violators.

I believe that such issues should be addressed by the concerned authorities. The students reaction cannot be justified, as it violates the rules. This issue has also highlighted how important it is to maintain professional boundaries within institutions. When these boundaries are diluted it can lead to unforeseen circumstances and potentially cause greater harm.

People should understand the importance of privacy of others. A person who works in position like teaching must taught this to his students but before that he should learn this

These issues are sensitive and they must be handled legally and through the institution. Violence is not the only solution.

This incident could have been handled the other way. Classroom is not the place for proposal, it’s the place for learning. Proposal if at all a lecturer wanted to get approval from a girl, he could approach her friends or family or herself outside the campus. We can understand the kind of embarrassment the girl had to suffer. Students should have talked to the lecturer after the class, discussed and solved this with the girl with them. This way the lecturer and the girl would have felt safe and emotionally stable and feelings would have validated, and could continue their normal lives.

Its high time we should have professional ethics embedded in our educational and degree and should form a crucial criteria before giving jobs. However, mob assault is an equally worrisome subject. After all, safety while learning is as important as safety while working.

Voilence should not be justified in academic settings. The institution must intervene and report misconduct through institutional grievance mechanisms.

Such type of behavior increases concerns about safety of the students. I feel this situation is really alarming specially for a society where there is a lot of stigma around women studying professional courses. That being said, the responsibility to action against such incidents lies with he police and University authorities. Students should not take any unnecessary steps and such things should be handled through proper channels.

The professor’s behaviour was clearly unprofessional and breaches ethical boundaries, especially in a teacher-student setting where power dynamics matter.

However physically assaulting the professor was unnecessary and violent.

It is the duty of both the lecturer and the institution to ensure the dignity of professional boundaries and the rules and regulations for student safety. In such a situation, the institution should investigate; if found guilty, strict action must be taken against the lecturer.

These kind of incidents taint the professional relation between a professor and student. Formal action should be taken and rules should be made more strict to avoid incidents like this in future

A teacher and student relationship must be remained in a boundary. Such type of act must be taken legally and proper conduct and rules should be implemented to prevent it.

Workplace harassment or even at educational institutions has become a major issue these days. Line has to be drawn by an individual. Every grown adult knows what is he doing and what is the line that should not be crossed, but they just ignore to control their impulses. The legal system in the country has to swift and effective to prevent such instances from taking place.

Clearly this is a violation of professional ethics and this issue must be addressed seriously. And i think that issues like these should be handled through appropriate institutional and legal channels.

I feel we all get it when someone crosses their boundary and we don’t stop them just because they are colleagues, just because he is my boss ,just because someone is our senior, and there is always a ‘because they are your something ‘.Its hard to set boundaries, because we fear that we will be targeted or we will be thrown out of the group or any place we are working or studying. This fears comes from our surroundings, people around us lectures us to stay quiet.

I feel we should take a stand no matter whatever happens because people like these who don’t know anything about boundaries and ethics, should know that there will be consequences for these kind of behaviour.

College authorities should take full responsibility to punish these kind of offensive conduct and make sure of no future occurence of such unethical practices.

But students assaulting a professor is not ethically /legally right .

This is disturbing—teachers must maintain boundaries. Students deserve respect and safety, and issues should be handled properly, not through violence.

This is unethical and unprofessional. Conducts like these must be thoroughly investigated and prevented. Strict action must be taken on those committed the mistake!

This typically states the importance of professional boundaries that must be maintained at any cost. A great rapport between a student and a teacher can bring out a very safe and a respectful environment.

Incidences like these should be taken as a serious concern for the whole society and not only for the college and students. We Indians always hear that teachers should always be respected and they are considered as God, but we forget that before making someone great, their qualities should be tested. These kind of teachers are not only a threat for the students or girls, but also for our society and culture. Colleges should train teachers and other staffs also so that they know how to behave as per the profession.
