Isometric Exercise

There are different types of exercises one can opt for, from walking, cycling, swimming, strength training, and Zumba to even sports. But isometric exercise is different from all these workout modalities.

What is Isometric Exercise?

In isometric exercise, the body is in a static position and muscles are contracted; there is no increase in the length of the muscle. This is an effective method to train a specific group of muscles only.

It is commonly advised for patients who are injured and those who have arthritis. It is also helpful in lowering blood pressure because the body is not in movement, helping to improve the vascular system as the breathing is slow and controlled.

Some of the isometric exercises include:

  1. Wall Sit
  2. Plank
  3. Side Plank
  4. Calf Raise Hold
  5. V Hold
  6. Glute Bridge
  7. Dumbbell Hold Above Head
  8. Isometric Pushups

Isometric exercises are not very effective in strengthening muscles; they increase muscle endurance. They help in rehabilitation and low-impact workouts. To strengthen a muscle, resistance training or lifting weights is a must.
