  1. Meningocele:
  • A protrusion of meninges (protective membranes) through a spinal defect.
  • Spinal cord remains in its normal position.
  1. Myelomeningocele:
  • A protrusion of both meninges and spinal cord through a spinal defect.
  • More severe than meningocele, often associated with neurological deficits.

Both conditions require surgical intervention and multidisciplinary care.

Prevent NTDs:

Thus any woman who intends to become pregnant should start with folic acid 400 micrograms per day at least a month before becoming pregnant and should continue the same dose during early pregnancy.
Since many of the pregnancies are unintended, it’s best to say that any woman capable of getting pregnant should take 400 micrograms folic acid per day to prevent neural tube defects.

A question:
If there is a history of Neural tube defect in the previous pregnancy, how much folic acid this mother should take now (if planning pregnancy)?
