Hypothroidism,Weight gain and diet

Hypothyroidism,a common condition in many women. What does it mean?Hypo means**“less**” and throidism “thyroid hormone” in lay man’s terms. The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped organ situated in the neck.It secretes the **T3( active form) and T4 ( inactive form).**The pituitary gland secretes the TSH (Thyroid stimulating Hormone) which controls the levels of T3 and T4 by stimulating thyroid gland. It follows a negative loop mechanism.

If levels of TSH are more, T3 and T4 levels fall and if levels of TSH are less, then T3 T4 levels are more.

So in Hypothyroidism ,TSH level is low and T3 T4 levels are high. The thyroid is underactive. This condition affects the metabolism, temperature of the body, skin, hair and weight.

The weight gain due to hypothyroidism is very difficult to manage. It requires a lot of dietary and lifestyle changes to overcome this weight gain.Consuming a lot of vegetables ( **avoid cruciferous vegetables),**Proteins, millet varieties etc can help in the diet.Cruciferous vegetables have to boiled or cooked properly before consumption. Also soya products are generally contraindicated in thyroid conditions.Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with walking, yoga ,strength training or any physical activity helps to keep the metabolism up.Of course the medication advised by your doctor is a must.

So,how many of you or your close relatives face this weight gain due to hypothyroidism? What helped them to overcome this?

Hypothyroidism results from insufficient thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). Primary hypothyroidism involves high TSH with low T3 & T4, while secondary hypothyroidism shows low TSH and low T3 & T4.

The weight gain is much faster and loosing it becomes a challange. I have seen individuals losing weight at a very slow pace in comparison to the efforts they put. They need a stronger diet control then other people who are trying to loose weight.

I congratulate the author for choosing a popular topic.

Although clear explanation of thyroid physiology and weight gain, with practical diet/lifestyle tips, strengthening patient understanding, the dietary advice oversimplifies evidence and may risk over-restriction without clinical context. Keep posting.

Hypothyroidism is a metabolic disorder. One should follow healthy lifestyle and balanced diet and continuous medicine without fail.

Weight gain in hypothyroidism is real, but often modest (usually 2–5 kg). Much of it is due to fluid retention and slowed metabolism, not just fat accumulation.

Managing hypothyroidism goes beyond medication; diet, physical activity, and consistency plays a big role. Small lifestyle changes, along with proper treatment, can make a meaningful difference in long-term outcomes.
