How to conquer stress during exams?

As the exam season arrives, the whole vibe of a medical student’s hostel changes from black coffee shots to 2 am group study sessions in corridors is all you can see. But there’s one student sleeping peacefully in her room that’s me :winking_face_with_tongue:, just to complete my sleep quota of 6 hours.

For a long time, exams were synonymous with stress for me. Soon after my first-year medical exams, I realized that this mental stress during my exams cost me my performance and physical health. That’s when I learned how I can beat the stress during exam season.

So, here are a few tips to stay stress-free during exams:

  1. Slow and Steady wins the race
  • Start studying as early as possible when a new semester begins.
  • It’s the most real and honest advice.
  • Starting small, even just 30 minutes a day, compounds to good results.
  • It helps with understanding concepts and also answering indirect questions in exams rather than just cramming at the last moment.
  1. Sow the seeds to reap in future
  • During exams, you don’t have time to read whole textbooks.
  • So, while you study, prepare short notes or make sticky notes of a topic; it saves you hours during exams.
  • It fastens the revision and saves time for you to sleep.
  1. Strategy beats struggle
  • It’s good to study the whole syllabus during classes but not feasible in exams.
  • Study smart, not whole—PYQs are your savior.
  • Don’t aim for completing the whole syllabus in one night.
  1. Sharpen your axe before you cut the tree
  • Sleep is the only tool that will help you retain the syllabus.
  • Keeps you attentive during an exam
  • The mind works and answers best when it is well-rested.
  1. First impression is the last impression
  • The examiner is anonymous, and so are you; your answer sheet is the only reflection of your knowledge.
  • Present your answers in a clear, concise, and well-formatted pattern.
  • Give structure to your answers with bullet points, flowcharts, and diagrams
  1. Growth over grades
  • The right mindset is what removes fear and anxiety.
  • Exams aren’t to stress you but to help you grow.
  • You can master skills like time management, discipline, and strategic thinking.

A balanced approach towards study and exams is what keeps stress at bay. And every exam season is the time to grow and level yourself up and not to test your worth in one day.

Haha, I love how you’ve turned exam season into a growth season instead of a stress marathon! For me, tackling exam stress is all about balance. I make a realistic timetable, stick to short study bursts, and reward myself with breaks. Sleep is non-negotiable, just like you said, and I rely on quick notes and flowcharts for last-minute revision.

"Love this perspective! The ‘Sow the Seeds’ tip is so underrated—people forget that revision is only fast if the groundwork was laid months ago. Prioritizing that 6-hour sleep quota is a total game-changer for cognitive retention.

Relatable and well-written. Starting early really is the most underrated stress-buster—consistent, small study sessions build both confidence and retention far better than last-minute cramming. This is a practical tip many students need to hear.

Yes, consistent study not only prepares us for exams, but also for the future by increasing our knowledge. And nobody wants a doctor who studied and crammed the night before an exam. So, one should focus on gaining knowledge more than passing exams.
