How Himachal Hospitals Are Preparing for Heat Stroke

In March 2026,Himachal recorded its earliest heatwave in 5 years which arrived 74days earlier than expected with alarming rise in temperatures.

So , the government directed the hospital to set up …Dedicated Heat Stroke Rooms in hospitals.

Why this matters?

Heat stroke is not just “heat.” It’s a medical emergency .A core temperature more than 40 degrees can lead to organ failure and death .

What these Heat Stroke Rooms include?

  • Dedicated beds
  • Cooling setup including coolers, ice packs , cooling blankets , etc
  • Continuous monitoring
  • Trained staff
  • IV fluids , ORS supplies

Why Himachal is at higher risk?

There is a rise in unpredictable heat waves pattern and people are not adapted to tolerate such heat patterns.

Prevention

  • Stay hydrated (2–3L/day)
  • Avoid peak heat hours ( 11AM-4PM)
  • Wear light cotton clothes
  • Avoid alcohol , caffeine

In many states , such patients are managed in regular emergency beds , which can lead to delays and these delays can even prove fatal .

So , should every state have dedicated heat stroke units like this ?
